   Details

Block1. CTO and other roles in a startup/small business: functions and area of responsibility. Stages of startup/small business development (6-8 hours)
  • Development stages of technological business: challenges and points of growth at each stage
  • The role of CTO in a startup/small business, area of responsibility, processes, stages, and options for career development
  • Understanding of C-roles in a startup, how to set up communication and expectations (CEO, CMO, CBDO, CPO)
  • Allocation of shares in the team, motivation (option pool, share sizes)
Block 2. Fundamentals of the product approach and development (13.5-18 hours)
  • Data-driven, customer-driven, revenue-driven approaches in development: understanding of the basic concepts and metrics. Problem definition, problem discovery, etc.
  • How to build a system of metrics, which metrics will signal and show that something goes wrong?
  • Design thinking techniques
Practice 1 (case solution): "You want to launch a loyalty program for customers of a large supermarket chain, how will you solve this problem?" Work through the product idea (what is the problem, what data do we have, how will we define success, etc.)

Practice 2 (solving real startup problems): for the startup product identify whether there is an understanding of the audience, how priorities (in the development of new features) are determined, and how success is measured (metrics).
Block 3. People management and professional development of engineering managers/team leads; Managing Agile teams + building virtual teams (18-24 hours)
  • Selection and recruitment of team members. Development of a recruitment strategy for the organization: description of roles and grades, number of interviews, evaluation system, compensation system linked to expectations and performance.
Practice (case-solving): develop a system of expectations for the organization for a particular product and analyze the results of the interview, and how good it was.

  • Management cycle (planning, delegation, motivation, and control) Organization of development process, work with priorities (scrum, kanban, waterfall, wip control Motivation and staff development (performance calibration, job family, role expectations, how to understand how much to pay and whom? organization of 1-1 meetings) Working with feedback: organizing feedback rounds, planning action items, promotion case decisions, performance evaluation, etc.
  • Change management: how to implement new processes in the team, how to explain them.
Practice: 2 games (case-solving) Example of Situation 1: superiors want to implement team performance metrics to understand the effectiveness of the team in terms of operations safety and development speed. The data for such metrics is not easy to collect, the team and the lead will definitely resist Example Situation 2: with scrum, we need a daily meeting, but team introverts don't want to see anyone, what to do?

  • Conflict Management (structure and types of conflicts, stages of conflict development, conflict resolution strategies, conflict prevention: techniques of conflict-free communication)
Practice (case-solving): analysis of several cases of conflict situations in the team and organization.

  • Firing people (basic mistakes when firing an employee, recommendations for conducting a conversation, feedback when firing, an algorithm for talking to a subordinate (Pre-reading + meeting with experienced HR with answers to questions)
  • Productivity review - every few months
Block 4. Managing Development Resources (4.5-6 hours)
  • Correct estimation of resources for preparation, and implementation of new projects (Portfolio management, operational plans, etc.)
  • Budgeting: how to allocate resources correctly and not 2 or 3 times less
  • Using OKR for resource estimation
Practice: case analysis with an estimation of time needed to clarify requirements to the product and time required for development, support, bug fixes (the solution should be described from both technical and business sides and defended in a game form in front of the "project management")
Block 5. Technical expertise, operational excellence (4.5-6 hours)
  • Systems monitoring in production - what and how to monitor, what metrics to control;
  • Choosing software products and platforms for a startup (licenses - what can be used and when, team skills, best practices)
  • Maintenance of technical debt. Planning infrastructure changes and dealing with debt when the business requires new features for customers.
  • DevOps culture and global DevOps practices
Practice 1 (case-solving): Determine the cost of operating a particular technical solution in a particular implementation

Practice 2 (real startup problem solving): consider critical business processes in a startup and try to understand how to ensure their continuity
Block 6. Legal issues when entering the international market (3-4 hours)
  • Labor contracts, product formalization, patents, licensing. When is it necessary to involve lawyers?
  • IP transfer, where to license, opensource.
Block 7. Career Day (2-4 hours)
Matching with startups in the Starta VC portfolio for the purpose of further employment and defining a personal development strategy after the program.
